Sawmills and the industry of resin were the main economic sources during the century untill the '80 when the last sawmill shut down. The process of de-industrialization and de-population, that has lasted since the 1950's, has left behind a vast region of Central Eastern Spain that competes with Siberia and the Artic provinces of Lapland as the least populated zone in Europe. As large as Austria, and less than two hours driving distance from Madrid, the region along the Spanish provinces of Soria, Guadalajara, Teruel and Cuenca is becoming Europe's largest desert in terms of population. According to official figures, this area has 1.63 inhabitants for every square kilometer against the 1.8 of Laponia and the 3 inhabitants for every square kilometer in Siberia. However, Javier Munoz, the former mayor of Selas points out that figures could be even lower than suggested because the official census does not represent the actual population of the villages.
