What Size Batting Square is Right for My Rag Quilt Project?. Batting squares for rag quilting need to be twice the width of the seam allowance smaller than the fabric squares you are using. For example, if you are rag quilting with 8” fabric squares and using a 1” seam allowance, the batting squares need to be 6”.
