Handmade porcelain ceramic palette.
The Clouds Palette celebrates our persistently wet climate here in the Pacific Northwest. Many would say that we here in the PNW don't use umbrellas but I love the simple beauty of their architecture. The interlocking cloud shaped wells allow for lots of small areas of color while the large textured "ground" well is perfect for making your own colorful puddles.
Ceramic palettes, especially those made from porcelain, provide a smooth white surface that shows colors brilliantly and will not stain. This palette measures approximately 7”x 8” and weighs about a pound and a half. I've attached clear silicone pads to the underside of the palette to protect wood table surfaces and prevent the palette from sliding around while working (these should be peeled off and set aside if submerging the palette in water or washing in a dishwasher).
The palette was made by carving the design into a clay slab. I then made a mold of the palette using pottery plaster. Porcelain slip is poured into the mold and water from the slip is absorbed into the plaster until the palette is firm enough to be removed. The clay edges are then smoothed by hand and set aside to dry completely. Once dry, the palette is fired to about 1900 degrees. Once cooled, it is dipped in glaze and fired a second time to about 2200 degrees. It's a slow and meticulous process but it results in a high quality ceramic palette.
