U.S.%20%234704%0A2012%2045%26cent%3B%20Purple%20Heart%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%20Purple%20Heart%20is%20one%20of%20the%20oldest%20military%20awards%20worldwide%20that%20is%20open%20to%20all%20who%20are%20wounded%20in%20battle.%20%26nbsp%3BThe%20Badge%20of%20Military%20Merit%20(the%20predecessor%20of%20the%20Purple%20Heart)%20was%20first%20awarded%20on%20August%207%2C%201782%2C%20by%20General%20George%20Washington.%20%26nbsp%3BWith%20the%20Revolutionary%20War%20nearly%20over%2C%20Washington%20wanted%20some%20way%20to%20repay%20his%20troops%20for%20their%20sacrifices.%20%26nbsp%3BHe%20created%20the%20Badge%20of%20Military%20Merit%2C%20to%20be%20awarded%20to%20soldiers%20displaying%20high%20merit%20and%20serving%20for%20over%20three%20years.%20%26nbsp%3BOnly%20three%20badges%20were%20known%20to%20have%20been%20awarded%20to%20Revolutionary%20War%20soldiers%2C%20with%20no%20documentation%20of%20any%20others%20until%20after%20World%20War%20I.%20%26nbsp%3B%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AIn%20October%201927%2C%20Army%20Chief%20of%20Staff%20General%20Charles%20Pelot%20Summerall%20petitioned%20Congress%20to%20have%20the%20badge%20revived%2C%20but%20the%20bill%20failed.%20%26nbsp%3BFour%20years%20later%2C%20General%20Douglas%20MacArthur%20resumed%20Summerall%26rsquo%3Bs%20work%2C%20overhauling%20the%20badge%26rsquo%3Bs%20design%20and%20issuing%20it%20on%20the%20200th%20anniversary%20of%20Washington%26rsquo%3Bs%20birth.%20%26nbsp%3BFrom%201932-43%2C%20the%20Purple%20Heart%20was%20awarded%20for%20wounds%20received%20in%20action%20and%20for%20acts%20of%20high%20merit.%20%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AIn%201943%2C%20with%20the%20establishment%20of%20the%20Legion%20of%20Merit%20%26ndash%3B%20a%20military%20decoration%20awarded%20for%20exceptional%20service%20and%20achievement%20%26ndash%3B%20the%20requirements%20for%20the%20Purple%20Heart%20changed.%20%26nbsp%3BSince%20then%2C%20a%20person%20must%20be%20a%20member%20of%20the%20U.S.%20Armed%20Forces%20and%20wounded%20or%20killed%20in%20action%20to%20be%20awarded%20the%20Purple%20Heart.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%202012%20Purple%20Heart%20stamp%20features%20a%20photograph%20taken%20by%20Ira%20Wexler%20of%20a%20Purple%20Heart%20Medal%20awarded%20during%20World%20War%20II.%20%26nbsp%3BThe%20image%20of%20the%20medal%20was%20enlarged%20from%20that%20used%20on%20the%202011%20stamp.%0A%0ASinking%20Of%20The%20SS%26nbsp%3BDorchester%0A%0AOn%20February%203%2C%201943%2C%20after%20the%20SS%26nbsp%3BDorchester%26nbsp%3Bwas%20sunk%2C%20the%20Four%20Chaplains%20sacrificed%20their%20lives%20to%20protect%20the%20other%20men%20on%20their%20boat.%0A%0AThe%20U.S.%20Army%20Transport%26nbsp%3BDorchester%26nbsp%3B(formerly%20a%20coastal%20liner)%20left%20New%20York%20on%20January%2023%2C%201943%2C%20with%20904%20passengers%20and%20crew%20aboard.%20Among%20them%20were%20four%20men%20who%20had%20met%20at%20Army%20Chaplains%20School%20at%20Harvard%20University%20%26ndash%3B%20Methodist%20Minister%20George%20L.%20Fox%2C%20Protestant%20Minister%20Clark%20V.%20Poling%2C%20Catholic%20Priest%20John%20P.%20Washington%2C%20and%20Reform%20Rabbi%20Alexander%20D.%20Goode.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%26nbsp%3BDorchester%26nbsp%3Bwas%20one%20of%20three%20troop%20transport%20ships%20in%20a%20convoy.%20The%20crew%20was%20on%20high%20alert%20because%20German%20U-boats%20had%20attacked%20American%20ships%20in%20the%20same%20area%20near%20Newfoundland.%20Because%20of%20the%20concern%20of%20attack%2C%20the%20men%20were%20ordered%20to%20sleep%20in%20their%20clothes%20and%20wear%20their%20life%20jackets.%20But%20many%20ignored%20the%20command%20because%20they%20found%20it%20hot%20and%20uncomfortable.%20Shortly%20after%20midnight%20on%20February%203%2C%20the%26nbsp%3BDorchester%26nbsp%3Bwas%20hit%20by%20a%20torpedo.%20The%20blast%20knocked%20out%20the%20electrical%20system%2C%20and%20left%20passengers%20trapped%20below%20deck%20in%20darkness.%0A%0AChaos%20ensued%2C%20but%20the%20four%20Chaplains%20calmed%20those%20on%20board%20while%20organizing%20the%20evacuation.%20As%20they%20passed%20out%20life%20jackets%2C%20they%20found%20there%20weren%26rsquo%3Bt%20enough%20for%20everyone%2C%20so%20the%20four%20Chaplains%20gave%20theirs%20away%20to%20other%20men%20on%20board.%20After%20helping%20as%20many%20of%20the%20men%20into%20lifeboats%20as%20they%20could%2C%20they%20linked%20arms%2C%20said%20prayers%2C%20and%20sang%20hymns%20until%20the%20ship%20eventually%20sank.%0A%0AAccording%20to%20one%20survivor%2C%20%26ldquo%3BAs%20I%20swam%20away%20from%20the%20ship%2C%20I%20looked%20back.%20The%20flares%20had%20lighted%20everything.%20The%20bow%20came%20up%20high%20and%20she%20slid%20under.%20The%20last%20thing%20I%20saw%2C%20the%20four%20Chaplains%20were%20up%20there%20praying%20for%20the%20safety%20of%20the%20men.%20They%20had%20done%20everything%20they%20could.%20I%20did%20not%20see%20them%20again.%20They%20themselves%20did%20not%20have%20a%20chance%20without%20their%20life%20jackets.%26rdquo%3B%20Of%20the%20904%20men%20initially%20aboard%20the%20ship%2C%20just%20230%20were%20rescued
