Description

Coates have been making charcoal in the traditional manner since 1819. The intense blackness of natural willow charcoal makes it a perfect drawing

The Coate family has specialized in the cultivation of willow in Southwest England since 1819. They have been producing the world's finest willow charcoal for artists for over 30 years. Each year the very best willow rods are selected to produce artist grade willow charcoal. The willow is sorted by diameter and burned in its natural shape, not compressed like most charcoals. This creates a charcoal with a velvety smooth stroke and a rich, deep black hue.
