Stephen Wesley Gorton, (1953-2015) was the director of the Paddington Art School, a highly successful life drawing school based in Sydney through the 80's and 90's. His new edition of Drawing Power has been created to coincide with a retrospective of his work. Stephen was first and foremost an Expressionist painter, his colour celebratory and strong, marks swiftly and deftly placed. He directed and taught life drawing at Paddington Art School from 1981-2001. He had a reputation for challenging students to lose their inhibition by working very fast and loose. He was an Archibald Prize Finalist in 1990 for Leigh Johnson, is the author of Drawing Power (1993), Dali, the Captain and I and his work has been exhibited in Europe, the United States and Australia. In 1996 he was invited by Dali’s former manager to be ‘the next Dali’, and appointed to paint in Cadaques, Spain.
