Many rare materials became available to the Chinese as the Empire expanded under the leadership of the Kangxi and Qianlong Emperors. Materials such as lapis lazuli, malachite, tourmaline, turquoise, puddingstone, and inkstone all make lovely bottles to collect. However, early examples are very hard to find, they are usually left plain to show the beauty of the materials. In the late 19th and early 20th century, however, snuff bottles were already being made to be collected by tourists and the more fancy and carved designs are not considered as attractive.
