Many well-known artists have used self-organised exhibitions to gain initial interest in their work: in 1988 Damien Hirst was in his second year at Goldsmiths College when he decided to organise an independent student exhibition, Freeze, in a disused London Port Authority administrative block in London’s Docklands. The show was visited by Charles Saatchi & Nicholas Serota and the rest as they say is history… If you went to art school you will have some experience of putting together a successful degree show, but striking out on your own might be
