About this stamp:The artwork for U.S. #5036 was created using a 15th century technique known as quilling. Artist Yulia Brodskaya cut strips of colorful paper, bent and glued them to create the vibrant image show on the stamp. The original 3-dimensional piece measured about 8” x 10”. Paper filigree, or quilling, is a centuries-old art technique which replaces paint, pencil, and clay with paper. Thin, colorful strips of paper are curled, crimped, bent, and glued to form beautiful and intricate three-dimensional designs. An art once reserved for upper-class ladies of leisure, quilling is now enjoyed by people of all walks of life.
