Sphagnum capillifolium, the red bogmoss, northern peat moss, acute-leaved bog-moss, or small red peat moss, is a species of Sphagnum native to Canada, the northern United States, Greenland, and Europe. Small red peat moss can be distinguished by its sweeping, outward-curving branches that resemble tresses. Sphagnum moss can hold large amounts of water within its cells, up to 20 times its own weight! This capability is due to its dead, empty cells called hyaline cells that fill up with water. This allows the moss to survive in wet boggy habitats around rivers and lakes. Description: You will receive a 5x5cm of moss in a plastic container. A small to medium sized plant, variable in color depending on the amount of light, red to pink in sunny areas yellow to green with pink patches in shade and can be placed on slightly drier pitches than most other Peat mosses, this moss also has no problem with shade, but then the beautiful red color usually changes to green. We think this is one of our nicest capillifoliums, selected and propagated from just a single head which piqued our interest, the years spent propagating it show that the traits are stable; colors from beautiful lemon-yellow in summer to bright pink-red in autumn until well into spring. Small red peat is a brownish-green to pinkish-red moss forming tight, carpet-like mounds. The leaves have no midrib and are tongue-shaped with a bluntly-pointed tip.
